Once Karlsson gets traded, I can't cheer for a team owned by Melynk. He's a disgrace.

I'll always have them in my heart obv, but I'm going to find another team I want to cheer for

Vegas - they make the most sense; even though they went to the finals, no one really wants to go there over other places. Their not contenders next year

Tampa - they make the most sense for the prospects + return that comes back. Also he fits like a glove with Hedman. Take Ryan at 5.75 and Callahan comes back to sweeten the pot. Has to be Foote or Sergachev and a shhit ton back

Calgary - with James Neal signing there the flames still have tons of cap space. Not to mention they have Hanifin, Brodie, Giordano, and Hamonic. I don't think they will be the one to get him but there's rumors about it

NY Rangers - makes no sense

NY Islanders - I don't trust Lou

Sucks to be the team you choose. The sens problems are all your fault.

It was reported on CTV News Ottawa less than an hour ago (before 7PM) that Karlsson was given permission by OTT for other teams to contact him and discuss an extension with him.

If, as Trevor mentioned, the only thing that prevents from staying here is a contract like what Doughty got, it definitely will look bad on Melnyk.

Uuuuuuuggghhhh... The leafs have signed Tavares, have Matthews and Babs, and all the Sens have got to show for it is a lousy recalled onesie... This is officially Hockey Hell for me.

Colorado could offer Cale Makar, + Ottawa's 1st, 2nd, maybe another player could get it done?

Colorado or Vegas. Preferable Colorado. Get the 1st back and rebuild properly.

Grab Barrie, Sens 1st and another prospect from Colorado and call it a day. Move on and rebuild. Hopefully with a new owner and new GM next season.

Doesnt make a lot sense for the Avs to include him. Out of all the future pieces I do think your own 1st would be the most valuable. Then you need to take back Barries cap hit to hit the floor. Not sure what else goes with that. But Makar, Timmins, and Bowers, Kaut would be all no goes at this time

Only way that makes sense is if Barrie is moved in a different deal for a Nylander/Marner level piece. Barrie and EK would be redundant on the same roster

Nah, Makar isnt going anywhere. Avs will be holding that 1st round draft pick hostage. I would be shocked that they include any of their top d prospects in any deal

They have to get back more than Buffalo got for ROR. They have to hit a home run after Hoffman fiasco. Has to be a monster deal or the fan base will run away.....not that a lot haven't already.

You take the best prospect plus whatever. Right now the best prospect that has been put on the table is Cody Glass. The Islanders can probably do the best package Pulock, Dobson and Wahlstrom. I actually wondered if the Isles drafted with the Sens and Karlsson in mind. Love both of their 2018 picks. Supposedly the Isles would do Ryan and Anderson as well...so, the Sens could take back some salary.

Not sure anyone should rule out Yzerman. Strange to see people say he is full in on Karlsson. The signing of McDonagh seems counter to that idea. Would he flip McDonagh for assets and package them with some of his own in an offer for Karlsson?

If a deal gets done it may very well involve three teams.

Can't see a deal with Colorado. Sens will go with top prospect offered, plus. They want prospects that can crack into the line up this year. Whatever Dorion's rebuild plan is it supposedly has a three year window. Next year's draft does not appear to be part of short term calculus.

Hey buddy- I think with the craziness of the thread switching over to this new blog, you might have missed this question. Just let me know, when you said:

No I said that the Leafs should draft Matthews but they might one day face the reality that Laine turned out to be the better scorer. So far it is pretty good. Laine 155 games and 80 goals. Matthews 144 games and 74 goals.
- spatso

Did you mean to say that you never actually said this:

This is an important point. I have always thought the Toronto media had way too much influence in the Leaf decision making. The media creates a theme, they pump the theme and everyone comes to believe in the theme because nobody wants to break the story line.

I believe the Austin Matthews story is a prime example of a runaway theme. Matthews was not even close to being the best player in the draft after Christmas. Both Finns were clearly better and had it not been for the media pumping his story as the Leafs first overall selection he would have dropped to third or fourth. Simply, everyone had too much invested into the storyline too pull back on the story everyone (including fans) wanted to see.

Anyway it will be apparent once the season starts that Matthews (a good player) does not punch in the same class as the Finns. Leaf fans will likely be discouraged. But, I don't think anyone will figure it out. They will wonder why everyone missed on Laine and they will blame Leaf management. They will miss on the pervasive influence the media has on Leaf management decisions.

- spasto

Or this:
Way too rich, the irony only gets better after some reflection.

The Leafs were a last place team. The Leafs are a last place team.

Matthews is not McDavid or Eichal or perhaps, even Laine or Puljujarvi. Yet Leaf fans have created this huge expectation around a kid that was not nearly the force of the Finns on the big stages of international hockey last year.

Not sure why the Leafs have delayed in signing him to a contract. Perhaps they think he is going to need some AHL development time. Nobody is hoping against Matthews, he should be a good player. But, there is absolutely nothing in his track record that suggests he will be an impact player in the NHL next year. Perhaps, there is a fatal flaw in the Leaf charism. If Matthews is put out head to head against veteran NHL centres every night and fans expect him to outperform all comers it is going to be a very long and disappointing winter for the blue and white.

I understand the importance of the summer season for Leaf fans. It is an opportunity to renew hope and create a bond with the team in the belief that next year will see the Leafs finally triumph. It is the Oiler model of a few years ago that had Yakupov (like Matthews, an older profile draft pick) dominating scoring in future NHL seasons or RNH being the slickest centre to come along in years.

Always keep in mind the notion that "we are different," is something that is really well understood. We know Matthews is not McDavid, not even close. We want to believe that he is better than Yakupov. Likely he is in the same range as RNH, but he will likely struggle to produce numbers as good as RNH got in his rookie year (18 goals, 34 assists in 64 games).

?

I’m sure you can easily clear this up.
